The PROs and CONs of TESL Perguruan..?

Salam,

Hmm,here I come(back) to make a review about TESL(from my perspective), and after this I’ll do the same with JPA.heh.Here we go:

First of all,I’ll explain about the outline of TESL ‘perguruan’,

For the preparation course,it will take about 1 and a half-years(18 months) AND take notice of this; THE FIRST YEAR of study will be completed here in Malaysia. So,before you can dream of having the tiring journey to UK or wherever it might be, you have to spend 2 YEARS AND A HALF here.

But this might be subjected to amendment,I mean I don’t know the procedure for this year. What am I presenting is based on previous years students.

OK,once you completed with a success,THEN you’ll fly,I and I’ve also heard, this year most of the students will be sent to UK.You will study there for 2 YEARS.

Then, when you completed your study there(it isn’t over yet!),and you come back to Malaysia, you will have to study(lagi..) for 1 YEAR.

So,in total, before you can actually teaching(drop the practical thing,ok?)you have to study for 5 years and a half.

That is the outline of this course. And you won’t know the country which the IPG will send you until you’re up for it.There’s a case where students does not achieve the targeted result and only been sent for a short course(2 weeks if I’m not mistaken).

The PROS:

1.It secure a JOB.

Well,we need this, didn’t we?Even though personally I myself think that I dont study to get a job,But who will stand being a VIP(Very Important Penganggur)?

2. Its a degree in TESL(Hons.)

I would like to highlight the HONEST term.People(Employers, I mean) are looking for that.It is valuable.

3. 6 years of seniority.

OK,6 years of seniority mean that you might be eligible for promotion.(I’m not sure myself but it does give an effect.)

4.They ‘hold’ you for 4/5 years.

4 and 5 years is standard for any scholarship. And I reckoned that it is a minimum(and sensible) period.

5.The job-market for TESL degree holder is wide.

Well,Malaysia needs people who are good in English. You wanna go into broadcasting or translator?Just wait for an opportunity.

And the CONS:

1.You have to teach-with INTEREST

Being a teacher need more than capability,it need keen and interest. If you dont want to be a teacher but you still accept this, you will jeopardize your students. That is detrimental,I warn you.

2.Short period of studying abroad.

Don’t bluff that you’re not excited about studying abroad. But living there for ONLY 2 YEARS compare to other scholarship which offer a longer period of study might affect your choice. So think.

3.Bonded as a teacher,bonded to the government.

Well,we know that teacher sometime has been used as a medium for political agenda.Personally,I dont like that.It was like,’if you dont support your government, you will be change to teach at rural area’. Hmm,pathetic.Well, dont deny this,I have a solid proof for this point.

4.The challenge of being a teacher.

Malaysian mentality are not up to what we have expected-as a teacher. We might confront student who is stubborn, rebellious, take things for granted. So,are you up to this challenge?

I guess..that is all.

Move to JPA!!

    Hey Munirah,

I’m Joanne. I’m 99% sure I’m taking up the TESL one. I prefer being a teacher over doing law(my JPA course). I was only in a dilemma for a while, before I got the TESL scholarship. =) But after thinking over it, I have a good feeling about TESL.. haha, not law.

But that’s because I want to become a teacher.. I don’t know about you.. For me I’m not worried about the bond under TESL because it’s quite likely I’ll remain a teacher in a government school till I retire.. I MAY consider lecturing in the future lah, but for now I prefer teaching school kids over lecturing.

I’m only slightly worried about handling the kids, but I believe where there’s a will there’s a way..

My main point would be.. do you want to be a teacher or not? The answer to that would basically solve your dilemma. :-) In the end, think long-term.. even if you spend only 2 years in UK for TESL as compared to JPA(3-5 years), but in the end you’ll be working a job based on that decision for 30 years..

    Take care,
    Joanne
